ランダーが高度推定を誤った要因としては、ソフトウェアが当社の期待通りに動作しなかったことが考えられます。着陸予定地に向けてランダーが航行中、クレーターの縁に当たる高さ約３kmもの大規模な崖の上空をランダーが通過した際、ランダー搭載のセンサーによる測定高度が急激に上昇したことが確認されました。フライトデータの解析によれば、この際、測定高度の数値と事前にランダーに設定された推定高度の数値に想定以上の大きな乖離が発生したことから、ランダーのソフトウェアがこの乖離の原因をセンサー側の異常値と、誤って判断した模様です。その後はセンサーによる測定高度の情報がソフトウェアによって遮断され、結果的にランダーのソフトウェアによる高度測定の誤りに繋がったと考えております。本来、このフィルタ機能（推定高度からの乖離が著しく大きい測定高度データを採用しない機能）は、センサーにハードウェア上の不具合等が発生し、誤った高度が計測された場合などに、ランダーの安定運用を維持するために設計されたものでした。
